Notes Verbs and adjectives in their -기 nominalized form act like nouns. However, nominalized phrases with -기 describe situations and processes that are situated in time. In other words, an event or state related to the situation would have a certain start and end point in time. That is why not all kinds of verbs and adjectives can follow expressions with -기.

Nominalized expressions with -기 can be followed by verbs and adjectives

denoting attitudes, emotions or wishes / expectations: 좋(아하)다, 나쁘다, 싫(어하)다, 재미있다, 바라다, 원하다, 거부하다 etc.;
describing ease or frequency: 쉽다, 어렵다, (불)편하다, 힘들다, etc.; and,
marking temporal boundaries: 시작하다, 끝내다, 그만두다, etc.
