Tergiversation N Falsification Means Vague Language Equivocation Argue

Word tergiversation
Definition n. Falsification by means of vague language; equivocation; to argue a point that is clearly wrong (but may not appear as such to others).
[This is presumably tergere, to wipe clear, + verso, to turn, but I must admit not understanding what relation that has to the definition.]
Sentence Effects must not (despite the tergiversatory nature of time in 1958) be permitted to precede causes.
