this story is an uneasy amalgam of realism and fantasy built around the adventures of the simple, goodhearted Toby (Trotty) Veck who , mesmerized by chiming bells and influenced by spirits 'dwarf phantoms' and elfin creatures, witnesses the hardships of his daughter Meg, the falsely accused Will Fern and the orphaned Lilian
these good characters are maltreated or condescended to by sir Joseph Bowely , alderman cute, Mr Filler and others
but the plight of the poor , as well as an appeal for deeper human feeling to be directed towards social improvements , is eloquently voiced by Will Fern
a final burst of good will resolves the various problems and effects a happy ending
