Samuel Johnson (1709-84) was an English writer, remembered as a lexicographer, critic, scholar, poet, and man of letters. He is widely regarded as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history" and is the subject of James Boswell's biography "The Life of Samuel Johnson."
