Break Organisms Naturally E.G Gm Describe Approaches Bioremediation

Bioremediation utilizes either naturally occurring microorganisms that break down organic materials or genetically modified organisms designed to target specific contaminants.

Bioremediation utilizes either naturally occurring microorganisms that break down organic materials or genetically modified organisms designed to target specific contaminants.

Front Describe two approaches to bioremediation.
Back Bioremediation:
  • Using natural organisms - many microorganisms naturally break down organic material, producing CO2 and water, e.g. in oil spill, nutrients added to encourage microbial growth to break it down
  • Using GM organisms - attempts being made to develop GM bacteria that break down/accumulate contaminatns that they would not naturally encounter e.g. removal of mercury that accumulates in food chains
