Cell Reactions Compartmentalisation Separate Incompatible Define Term Explain

Front Define the term compartmentalisation and explain why it is useful for cells.
Back Compartmentalisation - formation of separate membrane-bound areas in a cell

Useful because:
  • Metabolism includes many different and often incompatible reactions
  • Containing reactions in separate parts of cell allows the specific optimum conditions to be met and maintained for each compartment allowing for different potentially incompatible cellular reactions to occur at the same time and it protects vital cell components (enzymes)
