Dialysis Fluid Normal Plasma Levels Glucose Blood Concentration

Dialysis fluid is formulated with normal plasma glucose and mineral ion concentrations to prevent their movement, and it lacks urea to create a concentration gradient for its efficient removal from the blood.

Dialysis fluid contains normal plasma levels of glucose and mineral ions to prevent net movement of these substances. It has no urea to create a steep concentration gradient for its removal from the blood.

Front Describe the constituents of dialysis fluid and explain why this make up is necessary.
Back Dialysis fluid:
  • Normal plasma levels of glucose - no net movement of glucose out of blood
  • Normal plasma levels of mineral ions - excess will move out by diffusion down concentration gradient into dialysis fluid
  • No urea - steep concentration gradient so much of urea leaves the blood
