Functions of cholesterol- Important precursor for: steroid hormones, fat soluble vitamins, bile salts
- Found in phospholipid bilayer for membrane stability and fluidity - hydroxyl group is attracted to phosphate heads & carbon rings attracted to hydrophobic tails of phospholipids in the center of membrane - fits between them which prevents them aligning too closely & holds them together at the same time
