Population Growth Individuals Increases Birth Rate Death Constraints

Natural population growth curves feature a lag phase (slow growth), a log phase (rapid growth), and a stationary phase (stable size), where birth rate equals death rate.

Le curve di crescita delle popolazioni naturali hanno una fase di ritardo (crescita lenta), una fase logaritmica (crescita rapida) e una fase stazionaria (dimensione stabile), dove il tasso di natalità eguaglia il tasso di mortalità.

Front Draw, label and annotate a generalised growth curve for natural populations.

Population growth curve:
  • Lag (slow growth) - small numbers of individuals reproduce, population increases slowly (birth rate > death rate)
  • Log (rapid growth) - as number of breeding individuals increases, population increases exponentially, no constraints act to limit population
  • Stationary (stable state) - external constraints limit further growth, size remains stable (birth rate ~= death rate)
