Pressure Thorax Muscles Lungs Describe Process Inspiration Linking

Front Describe the process of inspiration linking the action of muscles to the movement of strucrtures, change in pressure within the lungs and direction of airflow.
Back Inspiration:
  • Diaphragm contracts - flattens and lowers
  • External intercostal muscles contract, moving ribs upwards and outwards
  • Volume of thorax increases so pressure in thorax is reduced
  • Lower pressure in thorax than atmospheric pressure - air drawn thru nasal passages, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles into the lungs until atmohperic and thoracic pressure equalise
