Prey Population Predator Predator Prey Increase Food Pop Rate

Predator-prey cycles show how increases in predation lead to cycles of increase and decrease in prey and predator populations, as changes in the prey population affect predator food availability.

I cicli predatore-preda mostrano un aumento della predazione che porta a cicli di aumento e diminuzione delle popolazioni di prede e predatori, poiché le variazioni nella popolazione di prede influenzano la disponibilità di cibo per i predatori.

Front Describe and explain the general pattern shown in predator-prey cycles.
Back Predator-prey cycles:
  • Increase in prey population provides more food for predators - more survive and reproduce - increase in predator pop
  • Increased predator pop eats more prey, causing decline in prey because its death rate greater than birth rate
  • Reduced prey population can no longer support  large predator population, intraspecific competition for food increases, resulting in decrease in predator pop
  • Reduced predator numbers result in less prey population being killed - more prey survvive and reproduce, increasing the prey population
