Sympatric Members Interbreed Offspring Parent Define Speciation Species

Sympatric speciation occurs when members of two different species interbreed to form fertile offspring, leading to reproductive isolation due to different chromosome numbers.

La spéciation sympatrique se produit lorsque des membres de deux espèces différentes se croisent et forment une descendance fertile, entraînant une isolation reproductive en raison d'un nombre différent de chromosomes.

Back Sympatric speciation - when members of two different species interbreed and form fertile offspring
  • Offspring will have different number of chromosomes to either parent - no longer able to interbreed with members of either parent population
  • This stops gene flow and reproductively isolates hybrid organisms (often happens in plants)
