Front | What was Muybridge's great break through? When did it occur? |
---|---|
Back | Muybridge was challenged by California governor Leland Stanford in 1871 to prove that a horse's gallop included a moment where the horse was airborne. Muybridge spent years developing a functional method of proving this hypothesis, and in 1877 he succeeded after placing twelve cameras in sequence on a racetrack. As the horse galloped by, it tripped wires on each camera in sequence, producing twelve distinct images of the horse in motion. He spent the rest of his life with similar projects, documenting the motion of animals and humans with his photographs. |
