Ligand-gated or chemically-gated channels open or close when a specific chemical (ligand) binds to them, like when a neurotransmitter binds to a channel, causing it to open and allow sodium ions to enter the cell.
They open or close in response to the binding of a chemical or ligand to a specific region<div>Ex: Neurotransmitter binds to the channel which causes it to open and let sod ions into the cell</div>
