Nitrogen fixation converts gaseous nitrogen into nitrogen-containing compounds, via free-living or mutualistic bacteria in legume root nodules, which convert it to ammonia and then ammonium ions.
Fixarea azotului transformă azotul gazos în compuși cu azot, prin bacterii saprofite libere sau mutualiste din nodulele rădăcinilor leguminoaselor, care îl transformă în amoniac și apoi în ioni de amoniu.
