Front | What are the stages for succession |
---|---|
Back | 1. seeds and pores are blown by the wind and begin to grow 2. First species to colonize area called pioneer species 3. Pioneer species are adapted to harsh conditions 4. Pioneer species change abiotic conditions 5. The pioneer species die and form organic matter known as Humus 6. Humus makes the soil less hostile, allow water retention to occur in the soil, this cycle of organisms dying and leaving organic matter continues forming rich mineral soil. 7. Larger plants like shrubs grow deeper into the soil which retains more water 8. New species may change the environment making it less suitable for the previous species. 9. Different plants and animals better-adapted move in and out-compete the previous organisms and become the dominant species 10. Biodiversity increases 11. The last stage of succession occurs (Climax) which causes the ecosystem to become stable |
