Epithelial Cell Blood Co Transport Na  From Concentration Gradient

Absorption of glucose/amino acids by co-transport in the ileum involves active pumping of Na+ out of epithelial cells, creating a gradient that allows Na+ and the co-transported substance to diffuse in, then glucose diffuses into the blood.

Front Describe the absorption of glucose/amino acids by co-transport in the ileum.
Back
- sodium potassium ATPase actively transports 3 Na+ from epithelial cell into blood
- and 2 K+ from blood into epithelial cell
- maintains concentration gradient allowing

- Na+ ions to diffuse by facilitated diffusion from intestinal lumen into epithelial cell
- provide energy for co-transport of glucose against concentration gradient using the same carrier protein

- glucose diffuses by facilitated diffusion from epithelial cell into blood
