Insects receive oxygen as it's used up in respiration, creating a low O2 concentration which facilitates diffusion from open spiracles, down tracheae and tracheoles, into the respiring tissues.
- O2 used up in aerobic respiration - low O2 concentration in respiring tissue - when spiracles are open - O2 diffuses into spiracles down diffusion gradient - O2 diffuses down trachae and tracheoles into respiring tissue down diffusion gradient
