ér Yuē I 子貢曰 子曰 子貢曰[Zǐ Gòng Wú

text 子貢曰: 「 貧而無諂, 富而無驕, 何如? 」 子曰: 「 可也。 未若貧而樂, 富而好禮者也」 。 子貢曰: 「 《詩》云『如切如磋, 如琢如磨。 』其斯之謂與? 」 子曰: 「 賜也, 始可與言《詩》已矣! 吿諸往而知來者。 」

text-pinyin 子貢曰[zǐ gòng yuē]: 「 貧而無諂[pín ér wú chǎn], 富而無驕[fù ér wú jiāo], 何如[hé rú]? 」 子曰[zǐ yuē]: 「 可也[kě yě]。 未若貧而樂[wèi ruò pín ér lè], 富而好禮者也[fù ér hào lǐ zhě yě]」 。 子貢曰[zǐ gòng yuē]: 「 《詩[shī]》 云[yún] 『 如切如磋[rú qiē rú cuō], 如琢如磨[rú zhuó rú mó]。 』 其斯之謂與[qí sī zhī wèi yú]? 」 子曰[zǐ yuē]: 「 賜也[cì yě], 始可與言[shǐ kě yǔ yán] 《詩[shī]》 已矣[yǐ yǐ]! 吿諸往而知來者[gào zhū wǎng ér zhī lái zhě]。 」
englishtrans Tsze-kung said, “What do you pronounce concerning the poor man who yet does not flatter, and the rich man who is not proud?” The Master replied, “They will do; but they are not equal to him, who, though poor, is yet cheerful, and to him, who, though rich, loves the rules of propriety.” Tsze-kung replied, “It is said in the Book of Poetry, ‘As you cut and then file, as you carve and then polish.’-The meaning is the same, I apprehend, as that which you have just expressed.” The Master said, “With one like Ts’ze, I can begin to talk about the odes. I told him one point, and he knew its proper sequence.”
notes 子貢[zǐ gòng] and 賜[cí] are one and the same. 子貢 is a courtesy name, and the scholar's given name is 端木賜[duānmù cì]. Note that the text uses his courtesy name, while Confucius, his elder and his superior, addresses him by his given name.
