notes Pattern: A, B也 = A是B; A is B Note that 直 is moved after 也. This is done to emphasize it, which is perfectly grammatical and occurs very frequently in the Analects.
Note also Confucius' statement that people at birth are upright. This point went on to become one of the key tenents of Confucianism, as well as one of the key differences between Western and Chinese philosophies.
