Back | Characteristics of this are: An inflammation of the epiglottis due to bacterial infection that can produce severe swelling of the flap over the larynx. Can swell to two or three times its normal size, especially in young children. The airway may become almost completely obstructed, sometimes quite suddenly. Stridor (harsh, high-pitched, continued rough, barking inspiratory sounds) may be heard late in the development of airway obstruction. Characterized in adults by a severe sore throat. |
