Diving Reflex Slowing Heart Rate Caused Submersion Cold

Back This is a slowing of the heart rate caused by submersion in cold water, and may cause immediate bradycardia. Loss of consciousness and drowning may occur; however, due to the slower metabolic rate, the patient may be able to survive for an extended period of time.
