Front | When does the first stage of labor begin and end? |
---|---|
Back | This begins with the onset of contractions as the fetus enters the birth canal and ends when the cervix is fully dilated. This is frequently the longest stage of labor, lasting an average of 16 hours for a first delivery, as the cervix has to be streched thin by uterine contractions until the opening is large enough for the infant to pass through into the vagina. |
