Question | The fire ___________ (to bring) under control at 6 p.m. yesterday. |
---|---|
A | was been brought |
B | had brought |
C | brought |
D | was brought |
Answer | d |
Remark | When we use a passive verb, we say what happens to the subject, and we are more interested in the action than the person or thing that does the action. Therefore, the Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action. In the test sentence we see a definite time period 'at 6 p.m. yesterday' that shows that the action was finished in the past, so the Past Simple Passive should be used: ‘was/were+done/cleaned/seen’ etc. |
