| Front | Hello everybody. I would like to discuss today two expressions in the English language that are similar to each other and yet have a somewhat different meaning. The two expressions are “to try to fit a square peg into a round hole”, and the expression “to be a fish out of water”. And I’m going to start with, putting it…trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. And this is the example I thought of. Imagine we have a family, a mom and a dad and a few tiny children, y’know, small children that need a lot of help. And mom gets sick for a few days, she’s in bed, she can’t get out of bed. So dad has to take over mom’s responsibilities, but he’s completely overwhelmed. He doesn’t know how to cook a meal, he doesn’t know how to choose clothes, how to dress children in the morning, he doesn’t understand how to deal with kids getting in a fight with each other. Dad is just overwhelmed, he can’t handle the job, he can’t do the same job that mom does. We would say, y’know, having dad do the role of mom is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It just doesn’t work. |

| Back | Olá pessoal. Eu gostaria de discutir hoje, duas expressões da língua inglesa que são parecidas uma com a outra e ainda assim tem um significado, de certo modo, diferente. As duas expressões são “try to fit a square peg in a round hole” (Tentar colocar um pino quadrado num buraco redondo) e a expressão “to be a fish out of water” (ser um peixe fora d’água). E eu vou começar com “trying to fit a square peg in a round hole”. E este é o exemplo em que eu pensei. Imagine que temos uma família, uma mãe e um pai e algumas crianças pequenininhas, sabe, crianças pequenas que precisam de muita ajuda. A mãe fica doente por alguns dias, elas está de cama, ela não consegue sair da cama. Então o pai tem que assumir as responsabilidades da mãe, mas ele está completamente sobrecarregado. Ele não sabe como fazer comida, ele não sabe como escolher roupas, como vestir as crianças de manhã, ele não entende como lidar com crianças brigando umas com as outras. O pai está simplesmente sobrecarregado, ele não consegue lidar com o trabalho, ele não consegue fazer o mesmo trabalho que a mãe faz. Nós diríamos, sabe, “Ter o pai desempenhando o papel da mãe, é como tentar encaixar um pino quadrado num buraco redondo”. Simplesmente não funciona. |
