A "totem pole" is a tall wooden pole that has been carved (with images cut into the surface) and/or painted for cultural or religious reasons: "Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest often covered totem poles with images of salmon." Finally, the "low man on the totem pole" is someone who has little power or influence within an organization: "As the most recent hire, Dan was the low man on the totem pole." |
