Pituitary Egg Fsh Uterus Lining Gland Released Triggers

Front What are the stages of the menstrual cycle?
Back
  1. FSH is released by the pituitary gland, and travels in the blood to the ovaries, where it causes an egg to mature. At the same time, the FSH triggers the ovaries to make oestrogen.
  2. Oestrogen makes the uterus lining thick, and stops the pituitary gland from making more FSH. The pituitary gland now releases LH.
  3. The LH triggers ovulation (the mature egg is released).
  4. The ovary now produces progesterone. The progesterone stops the pituitary gland from releasing FSH and LH, so that no more eggs are released, and keeps the uterus lining thick, in case an egg is fertilised.
  5. If fertilisation doesn't take place, progesterone levels fall, and the uterus lining and egg are now released (period).
