c.1500, from Latin ironia, from Greek eironeia "dissimulation, assumed ignorance," from eiron "dissembler," perhaps related to eirein "to speak" (see verb). Figurative use for "condition opposite to what might be expected; contradictory circumstances" is from 1640s.
