Front Fibrous skeleton of the heart
Back Structure: a layer of dense collagenous connective tissue in the plane of the coronary sulcus that separates the atria from the ventricles.
a) Has four interconnecting rings corresponding to the orifices of the four valves.
b) pierced by the atrioventricular bundle

Functions:
1. Attachment of cardiac muscles of atria and ventricles
2. Electrical insulation between atria and ventricles
3. Attachment of four heart valves and keeping them open.
