Structure: broad, irregular, inferior opening of thoracic cavity, almost entirely enclosed by muscular diaphragm

Formed by:
a) body of T12
b) 12th rib
c) costal margins
d) xiphoid process

Function: allows passage of primary structure moving between thorax and abdomen (esophagus, aorta, inferior vena cava, sympathetic trunks, vagal trunks, thoracic duct, greater splanchnic nerves)
