Back Structure: an oval depression on the right side of the interatrial septum  

Function: marks the previous location of the foramen ovale (opening in the fetal heart that allowed blood oxygenated by the placenta to pass directly to the left side of the heart for distribution to the body, bypassing the non-functional lungs)
