Elastase Emphysema  Chemical Irritants Cigarette Smoke Damage Lung

Emphysema is caused by chemical irritants in cigarette smoke damaging lung tissue, leading to phagocyte recruitment that produces elastase. High elastase concentrations then override inhibitors, breaking down elastic fibers in the alveolar wall.
