The signal recognition particle (SRP) binds to a signal sequence on a nascent polypeptide, halting translation until the SRP-ribosome complex docks at an ER receptor, where translation re-initiates and the polypeptide grows into the ER lumen via a transport channel before being vesicularized or embedded in the membrane.
