Nutrients like nitrate and other ions enter the water from an exterior source; plants grow, especially at the surface where there is more light; light is blocked for underwater plants, and they die; since surface plants have their stomata in the air, oxygen escapes the water into the air and is not replaced because the underwater plants are dead; decomposers inside the water also consume the dead plants, which requires more oxygen; eventually, there is not enough oxygen for life, and the ecosystem dies.
