Haptens are small molecules recognized by antibodies but incapable of eliciting an immune response on their own; they require conjugation to a protein to become immunogenic.
Any small molecule that can be recognized by a specific antibody but cannot by itself elicit an immune response. These molecules must be chemically linked to a protein molecule to elicit antibody and T-cell responses
