Azathioprine is a powerful cytotoxic drug converted in vivo to its active form, killing rapidly proliferating cells, including lymphocytes responding to antigens; it is used as an immunosuppressant for autoimmune disease and transplantation.
Azathioprine is een krachtig cytotoxisch geneesmiddel dat in vivo wordt omgezet in zijn actieve vorm, die snel prolifererende cellen doodt, waaronder T-cellen die prolifereren als reactie op antigenen. Het wordt gebruikt als immunosuppressivum voor auto-immuunziekten en transplantatie.
