The Bonan people are believed to be descended from Muslim Mongol soldiers stationed in Qinghai during the Yuan or Ming dynasties. Bonan were traditionally Tibetan Buddhists, but some converted, and then moved north and east. The Bonan that didn't move are considered to be a part of the Mongur ethnicity.
