---|---|
Back | The arrival of Henry II's troops in 1171 was the first wave. However, English didn't gain a foothold and was almost non-existent by the late sixteenth century, mainly disposed with through the weaponisation of Gaelic in the opposition to the Reformation. The second came with the colonisation of Ireland in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Irish aristocracy began to learn English to gain influence. The third was the Union, which accelerated the progress of Anglicisation. |
