Front | What is the history of the English language bible? |
---|---|
Back | The first English bible was translated from Latin by John Wycliffe between 1380-82, which led to an increase in literacy, despite the book itself being contraband. William Tynedale published his translation from Hebrew in Germany in 1525. It was smuggled into the country. Shortly after Tynedale's execution, Henry VIII made a u-turn and published the Great Bible, which in turn came to be the King James Bible. |
