Back | Many of the speakers of Gaelic were rural workers who were hardest hit by the famine of the mid-nineteenth century, which lead to the death of many monolingual Irish. It is speculated that half of the Irish speakers died. There was also huge migration, both to England and across the Atlantic to America. |
