Languages International Times Operated Were  Latin Long Period

Front Which languages have, at various times, operated as international languages? And why were 
Back Latin for a long period was used throughout Europe and the wider world.
French was used extensively during the eighteenth century and continues to be an important international language, though it has dwindled post-WWII thanks to technological advances made by English-speaking countries.
Pre-WWI there were several artificial languages created, most prominent among them Esperanto.
English has since then taken over.
