Social structure - system in society with a unique pattern of relationships

Functionalism/Functional analysis - a "normal" society requires all parts to run smoothly

latent function is an unrecognized positive or negative consequence of an action
manifest function is an action taken to help some part of the system 
dysfunctions are the harmful consequences of people's actions 
blankfunctions are the beneficial consequences of peoples actions 

Conflict Theory - Power differentials created & how they contribute to the maintenance of social order
power - influence over other people

Symbolic Interactionism - interact through a shared understanding of words/gestures/symbols
Symbols - things we attach meaning to 

Social Constructionism - social reality constructured from communication & working together
currency - useless without the knowledge that it represents money
