Text
Theories of Motivation:

1) Instinct Theory - Evolutionarily Programmed
2) Arousal Theory - Maintain optimum energy
-Yerke-Dodson law of social facilitation - U-shaped function between arousal & performancy
3) Drive Reduction Theory - eliminate states of tension
-secondary drive - drives unrelated to biological processes, stem from learning
-Negative feedback loops - maintain homeostasis & shutoff @ homeostasis
-primary drives - food/water/warmth/homeostasis
-drives - Internal states of tension that activate particular behaviors focused on goals

Need Based Theories

4) Maslow's hierarchy of needs:
-physiological(survive)::bottom
-Safety
-Love/belonging
-Esteem
-Self actualization::top
5) Self Determination Theory - Emphasizes 3 universal needs; Maslow Heirarchy
-Autonomy - Control of actions/ideas
-Competence - Complete/excel difficult tasks
-Relatedness  - feel accepted/wanted in relationships

6) Incentive Theory - desire to pursue rewards
7) Expectancy Value Theory - individual % success/how much you want to succeed
