Hektoen Enteric Agar is a culture medium used to differentiate Salmonella (which forms a black precipitate due to H2S production) from Shigella (which does not).
Text | Salmonella and Shigella can be differentiated on culture using Hektoen Enteric Agar::culture media |
---|---|
Extra | Hektoen enteric agar is useful for differentiating between Salmonella and Shigella Salmonella produces hydrogen sulfide which forms a black precipitate when it comes into contact with thiosulfate in Hektoen agar Shigella does not produce hydrogen sulfide and does not create a precipitate on Hektoen agar with ingcolonies remain green without a black center |
