Protease inhibitors (saquinavir); protease is an HIV-encoded enzyme responsible for cleaving the initial pol and gag polypeptides into their final products.The env gene product also undergoes posttranslational cleavage. However, a host-encoded enzyme, not HIV protease, mediates this cleavage.
