This note identifies three viruses associated with cancer: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Human Papillomavirus (HPV), and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). It details their mechanisms, such as HBV's link to HCC and HPV's E6/E7 proteins affecting p53 and Rb, leading to cervical cancer, and EBV's association with Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Front | (3) viruses associated with cancer → associated mechanisms? |

Back | ALL cancer-causing viruses are DNA viruses (except HCV) → HBV | HPV | EBV → cell proliferation with excess DNA nucleotide synthesis in S phase → HBV has strong association with HCC HPV produces E6 viral protein which ↓Rb and E7 viral protein which ↓p53, which kicks cell cycle into overdrive and leads to overproliferation | overgrowth of epithelial cells, dysplasia, and ultimately cervical cancer EBV is associated with Burkitt lymphoma (B-lymphocyte lymphoma), which manifests as B cell proliferation, and Nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The t(8;14) translocation is consistently associated with Burkitt lymphoma, but this translocation alone is not found in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. ↓ Burkitt lymphoma Nasopharyngeal carcinoma Oral hairy leukoplakia |
