 - pathogen made safe so no risk of infection; killed/inactivated bacteria/viruses, weekened strains of live bacteria/viruses, toxin molecules altered and detoxified, isolated antigens extracted from pathogen, genetically engineered antigens
 - small amounts of vaccine injected, triggering primary immune response, producing antibodies/memory cells, if in future you come in contact with live pathogen, secondary immune response triggered and pathogen destroyed before symptoms
