Cell Water Moves Osmosis Higher Membrane Lower Solution

In hypotonic solutions (higher WP), animal cells lyse, while plant cells develop turgor pressure; in hypertonic solutions (lower WP), animal cells crenate, and plant cells plasmolysis.

Front Osmosis in animals/plants 2.1.5(e)
Back Solution has higher WP

- animals, water moves in by osmosis, higher HP, cell membrane can’t withstand so bursts (cytolysis or cell lysis)

- plants, water moves in by osmosis, higher HP pushes membrane against cell wall (turgor pressure)

Solution has lower WP

- animals, water moves out by osmosis, lower HP, cell crenation

- plants, water moves out by osmosis, lower HP which pulls cell membrane away from cell wall (cell plasmolysed)
