Cells Sieve Transporting End Tube Phloem Structures Living

This card describes the structures of xylem (water and mineral transport, support) and phloem (solute transport, living tissue with sieve tube elements and companion cells).

Tato karta popisuje struktury xylému (transport vody a minerálů, podpora) a floému (transport fotosyntetátů, živoucí tkáň s průdušnicovými elementy a provázkovými buňkami).

Front Xylem and phloem structures 3.1.3(b)
Back - largely non living tissue, transporting water/mineral ions from roots and supports plant

- vessels long, hollow structures made of several columns of cells joined end to end

- phloem is living tissue transporting solutes from leaves to rest of plant, flows both up and down plant, transporting vessel is sieve tube elements (many cells end to end forming hollow tube), not lignified, sieve plates between cells allows contents to flow through (due to large pores in cell wall, no nucleus or other organelles)

- companion cells (maintain nucleus and organelles) linked to sieve tube elements by many plasmodesmata, companion cells active and seen as life support system for sieve tube cells
