- farmers only grow few diff species of crop with best characteristics for high yield, dec bio, techniques that maximise food production but lead to dec bio include;

 - deforestation (inc land to grow crops)

 - remove hedgrows (to use large machinery and free extra land)

 - chemicals in pesticides/herbicides (pesticides kill pests eating crops, dec species diversity as less pests and so less food source, herbicides kill weeds (plants growing in unwanted areas) to prevent competition with other plants
